In early April of 2011, a 49 year old patient came for her first visit with our office complaining of severe menopausal symptoms including; hot flashes and night sweats, weight gain, insomnia, hair loss, feelings of dread and doom and crying easily. In particular she was experiencing 2-3 hot flashes a day and 1-2 hot flashes/night sweats each night that would waken patient from her sleep. Patient also explained she could easily fall asleep when first going to bed for the night, but would wake up almost every night anywhere from 2am-4am and was then not able to return to sleep.

In regards to weight gain, the patient admitted she had only put on a few pounds but was concerned since the weight gain had only occurred in her abdomen.

Patient also described strong cravings for chocolate daily and admitted to giving into cravings most if not all of the time.

Finally, patient stated she was currently on a hormone replacement therapy prescribed by her previous doctor.

Several tests were immediately ordered to find the root causes of patients menopausal symptoms and to properly assess best plan of treatment. Patient was sent home with three lab tests, an adrenal test, a post menopausal hormone panel and a lab request for a thyroid panel. Some dietary changes, including an increase in the amount of protein eaten and a decrease in amount of carbohydrates eaten, were suggested.

At the follow up appointment later that month it was revealed that the lab results showed exceedingly high hormonal levels that put patient at risk for breast cancer and validated the emotional state patient had been experiencing. Hormones were immediately decreased and eventually discontinued until the patients body had metabolized the high levels. Patients liver was also supported so it could clear the hormonal levels. Finally an adrenal treatment was initiated.

In early July 2011 patient returned for a second follow up appointment to access how patient was responding to treatment plan suggested in last visit. Patients reported that her depression was 70-80% less, her crying jags had stopped, she was experiencing fewer hot flashes and they were less intense when occurring, her memory and mental/emotional state had improved, her chocolate cravings were mostly gone, and her sleep issues had slightly improved.

Patient returned again in early September and said that her sleep issues had now greatly improved as well. Though she stated that she still had nights where she awoke anywhere from 2am-4am , she was now able to quickly return to sleep. She had also lost five pounds. Labs were repeated and patient was told to return again in early November.

At the patients follow-up appointment in November 2011 she was put on appropriate dose of only the hormone progesterone, to balance what the latest set of lab results had demonstrated. Since then the patient has continued to report an improvement in her sleep and has stated she is feeling increasingly more rested. None of the other symptoms she had complained about during her first office visit have returned.

The patient best summed up the success of the treatment of her menopausal symptoms when she stated that she was feeling back to her old self.

he mother of an 18 month old girl brought her daughter in to be seen for asthma but went on to also report her daughters stools were usually hard balls, that her daughter had large amounts of flatulence that was worse in the evening, and that she had a rash that was mostly on her face. In addition the mother was concerned because her daughter was hardly speaking anymore when at 12 months she was speaking some words and tried to speak frequently. While going over the child’s history it was also revealed that the 18 month girl had been experiencing frequent ear infections since about 7 months of age which were all treated with antibiotics.

The doctor suggested a dietary change which mostly consisted of taking the toddler off of any dairy products and adding probiotics. In addition a chewable calcium/magnesium supplement was ordered to replace the calcium/magnesium the child would have previously been getting from the dairy in her diet. A stool test was given as gut flora imbalance often occurs with frequent use of antibiotics in children. A follow up office visit was scheduled for two weeks from first visit.

At the two week follow up visit, the mother reported the rash had completely disappeared after just 3 days and that the child appeared to be much happier and was beginning to speak more again. The mother also said that the treatment of probiotics and the removal of dairy from the toddlers diet appeared to help with the daughters constipation as, the toddler’s stools were passing easier and she was no longer having bowel movements consisting of hard balls but rather was passing formed, tubular stools. The doctor’s suggestion to remove dairy from the child’s diet and to add probiotics cured most of the toddlers health problems including her decreased interest in speaking.

A 40 year old female patient visited the office complaining of anxiety, insomnia, severe heart palpitations, 35 pound weight loss in a short period of time, and a general feeling of unhealthiness.

Upon starting the examination, she informed the doctor she had recently found out her mother had terminal cancer and she was trying to deal with the news while continuing to handle the day to day responsibilities that went along with raising her four children.

She admitted to making poor food choices prior to the news of her mother and also admitted to frequently forgetting to eat since finding out about her mothers condition.

The patient had visited the emergency room twice proceeding the office visit, both times complaining of anxiety and heart palpitations.

Patient’s doctor explained the importance of taking care of herself and making herself eat at least small amounts of food every 2-3 hours. Doctor also explained that her adrenals (or stress glands) were already depleted from the stress of being a mother of four. Furthermore the doctor explained that the heart palpitations were most likely a result of forgetting to eat combined with not properly handling the stress she was under.

It seemed the patient found a great deal of relief just from understanding she was not experiencing pathological heart troubles and that her symptoms were caused by stress and poor management of stress.

The patient was instructed to eat a protein rich snack every 2-3 hours, to be compassionate with herself, and to allow herself the time and space to properly grieve about her mother’s condition. In addition a hormone panel and adrenal panel and test were ordered.

At the patients one month follow up she reported she had experienced no anxiety attacks since her first visit and that her weight loss had stabilized. The doctor went ahead and suggested adrenal supplements to support the adrenal gland as well as Vitamin C and Vitamin B5, explaining to the patient that the adrenal gland stores these vitamins.

The doctor also reinforced with the patient the importance of continuing to take time to care for herself and show herself love especially as her mother’s health continued to decline. The patient was told to start exercising as tolerated, even if walking to de-stess was all she could handle. Finally she was told to make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep and drink plenty of fluids, especially water.

At the patients six month follow up the patient happily announced she had experienced no further palpitations or anxiety attacks and that she was slowly dealing with the grief of the loss of her mother. In addition she was getting back to regularly exercising. By properly caring for herself as the doctor ordered, the patient was able to rid herself of health problems caused by the extra stress in her life.
